Once home to the State Savings Bank of Victoria, the building had retained its façade but lost much of its original interior character. Layers of walls, lowered ceilings and later alterations were stripped back to reveal the existing structure, proportions and architectural detail.

The design restores the romance of the building while introducing a more restrained contemporary interior. Original cornices and ornate archways are paired with marmarino plaster and dark grey terrazzo, creating a balance between classical character and modern clarity.

The project formed part of a broader re-evaluation of the salon, from its functional planning and operations through to the client experience and brand identity. We were interested in the idea that identity in retail is experiential, shaped by the small moments that are felt as much as they are seen.

The salon was always intended to be more than a place for an appointment. It is somewhere to pause, reconnect and spend time. The result is an interior that respects the building’s history while embedding a contemporary experience within it.
